I want to know...
(post your answers under comments please!)

1. Do you have health insurance?

If yes, is your coverage through your parents?

2. Have you been to the student health center?

If yes, how many times?

3. How do you feel about schools making it mandatory for students to have medical coverage?

Please list your name, age, major, and hometown.
Thank you!

1. Yes, I do have health insurance. And, yes, it is coverage through my parents.

2. I have never been to the student health center; I have no idea where it is on campus. (Laura, since you've become so familiar with this center, can I get an exclusive tour from you?) The only health-related center I know of on campus is the psychological center, and that's because I've read flyers of their interesting group discussions, etc.

3. In case anybody hasn't noticed: Students live a very stressful, even chaotic, life! A lot changes when stepping into the university arena... Students move away from home, sometimes from another country, or they might experience romance or other strong emotions for the first time in their lives... And who can really guide them or give them the right support when things go wrong? It's been my experience in the past with other health clinics on campus (specifically, the center at Marymount College comes to mind) the nurses and/or doctors have been especially accommodating and helpful. They're very open-minded people and are there to help students get the best help they can give, whether it's about a scratch on the knee or a broken arm, or wounded broken heart or STI, or __________ you fill in the example. Therefore, if all a student needs is health insurance to live a healthier life, then it's not a bad idea at all (to make it a rule that students must have health insurance), as opposed to going on without having it and therefore not receiving the proper care when it's really needed. Furthermore, I don't believe in the plan where schools narrow a student's options when it comes to picking out a health coverage plan. I've heard international students complain of this in the past. And, on a side note, Laura, I recommend you watch "Sicko" to see why mandatory health insurance can be a failure, as Michael Moore explores the topic to the extreme in this docufilm.

I have health insurance through my parents, but I sometimes stress out about losing it because there are all sorts of requirements I have to meet to stay on it (i.e. I have to be a full-time student, etc.)

I have never been to the student health center, although I have considered it because I have heard you can get some prescriptions cheap there.

I think it is important for students to have health coverage, but most students don't think about it until they get sick. So if the medical coverage at a school is reasonable and cheap I think it is OK for schools to make it mandatory.
